  G&TLRC submission to the new review of discrimination headed by Trevor Philips
  
  (1/3/05) The government has announced a review to investigate the causes of persistent discrimination and inequality in British society. Chaired by Trevor Phillips, the Equalities Review will report to the Prime Minister by summer 2006. It will:

  • investigate social, economic, cultural and other factors that limit or deny people the opportunity to make the best of their abilities;
  • provide an understanding of the long term and underlying causes of disadvantage that need to be addressed by public policy;
  • make practical recommendations on key policy priorities for: the government and public sector; employers and trade unions; civic society and the voluntary sector;
  • inform government plans for a Single Equality Act and the development of the new Commission for Equality and Human Rights.

• Human Rights Act and Travellers and Traveller and Gypsies
  
  Over the past year the Human Right Act (HRA) has been the focus of a bitter debate in which some sections of the media and political figures have claimed that Gypsies and Travellers are taking advantage of this legislation to subvert planning law and that the HRA should be repealed or amended.
  
  The paper, by the G&TLRC, seeks to evaluate the truth of these claims.
